When I bought the truck, the starter made a horrible grinding/whining noise and the truck wouldn't start. It looks like the alignment of the starter was off. When I crawled under the truck, the bendix was still stuck in the flexplate teeth. WebOct 25, 2016 · Also check your timing. Check the initial timing (at idle) and set it at 10 degrees or 12 degrees BTDC. If it is already set at one of those settings don't worry about it. Check your idle should idle about 750-800 rpms and drop to 600-650 rpms in drive.

Personally, I have never had to use a shim on any car I've owned. A friend bought a rebuilt last week, and I read the instructions while waiting for him!
WebSep 1, 2014 · Manually engage the starter drive to the flex plate with battery disconnected. Slip a paper clip between both the gear teeth to the flex plate and the starter. That's the clearance your looking for. To much clearance and you will shear the teeth off the flex plate. Also make sure you are using knurled bolts with 3/8 thread, not metric.
